Fear Inducing Message

If you do meth, you could end up looking like some of these people.........

This has happened to many people that use meth. They think that they will be fine, but they end up looking like a completely different person.

Many meth users will experience "meth mouth" which is the loss of teeth and the blackening and bleeding of gums. Meth users will also experience scabbing all over their body and their skin will begin to deteriorate.

If you do meth, you will end up looking like these people, or even worse, if you don't try to kick the habit soon!

If you don't do meth, your skin could go back to looking normal, you may not lose your teeth and
you will eventually look like a healthy person again.

If you are trying to stop using meth or afraid that you will become addicted, it is a good idea to go to a rehabilitation clinic or to see a drug counselor. Here are some numbers for rehab clinics...don't hesitate to call! 1-800-555-METH (6384)

Peripheral Route Processing

DON'T DO METH!

Two-sided Message

We would advocate people to not do meth because it can be extremely addictive and dangerous.

Others that would speak for the drug would say that it gives you a high like you have never experienced and that it gives you a feeling of euphoria.

It is true that you will experience a high, but you will also experience much more. You will have to come down from that high which is called "crashing" and during this time you will feel extremely depressed and possibly even sick.

Drug users would say that you can always take another drug to help you cope with the crash, such as heroin or cocaine.

The downside to this is that in addition to doing meth you will also become addicted to cocaine and possibly heroin.

It is an expensive lifestyle that would not only cost you your entire paycheck, but potentially even your life.

Explanation of Messages #2

Message #1 is meant to induce fear by showing the audience images that will upset them or make them feel uncomfortable. It also ensures that they will engage in danger control and not fear control by getting help from a rehab clinic if needed.

Message #2 is a simple message using peripheral route processing that is meant to distract the audience so that they will agree with the message.

Message #3 is a complex, two-sided message that uses central route processing by explaining two parts to a situation.

Subliminal Messages

If we had the power to create subliminal messages, we would like to put in a flash message during a primetime television show such as American Idol. The message would say "Don't Do Meth" and it would flash very quickly across the screen.

Jodie Sweetin Wants YOU to Stay Clean

Hey guys, I'm Jodie Sweetin, you may remember as Stephanie Tanner from the hit TV series "Full House". After the television show ended, I was at a difficult point in my life. I felt as though my whole world had just ended and because of my negative feelings I turned to drugs, in particular, meth. I was addicted for more than three years and during that time I lost my husband. I learned the hard way that drugs can destroy lives and now I am clean. I want to tell you that it is not worth the pain it causes for the few minutes of being high. Stay Clean!

Fergie Says "Don't Do Meth"

Hey, I'm Fergie and I was once addicted to meth. It was an extremely hard time in my life, but I made it through. I am now recovered and clean and my life is much better off. It isn't worth it to get involved with drugs, especially something as addictive and dangerous as crystal meth. Please stay clean and who knows, maybe you could become a pop star too!

Explanation of Messages

Message #1 uses classical conditioning by pairing not using drugs with an attractive person. Message #2 also uses classical conditioning by pairing an activity with an attractive person that does not involve drugs. Message #3 uses the classical conditioning principle of intensity by making the message brighter, larger and more perceptually intense. Message #4 talks about how we would like to do a subliminal message that flashes "Don't Do Meth" during a popular television show on primetime. Message #5 is from Jodie Sweetin who is a credible communicator because she is somewhat of an expert, she is similar to the audience because of her prior drug use and her age, and she is also attractive. Message #6 is from the pop singer Fergie who is also an expert, similar and attractive to the audience.

History of Meth Use

Methamphetamine, popularly shortened to "meth", is a psychostimulant and sympathomimetic drug. It enters the brain and triggers a cascading release of norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin. Because it simulates the mesolimbic reward pathway it causes euphoria and excitement, making it prone to abuse and addiction. It was first discovered in Japan in 1919 and because it is soluble in water it makes it a perfect candidate for injection. It is still legally produced in the United States under the name Desoxyn. In the 1960s, significant use of methamphetamine began and started to be created in the users' own homes. The recreational use of methamphetamine peaked in the 1980s and it is widely agreed that San Diego, California is the methamphetamine capital of North America. Trafficking and abuse of methamphetamine in the United States have been on the rise for the past few years. This drug is having a tragic impact on many communities throughout the country.
Methamphetamine is a highly addictive drug that can be manufactured by using products commercially available anywhere in the United States. The chemicals used are extremely volatile and the immature chemists run the makeshift laboratories, which are often found in hotels or areas where children are present, cause deadly explosions and fires. The byproducts of methamphetamine production are extremely toxic and harmful the environment. The stimulant effects of meth can last for hours instead of minutes, like other drugs. Often the user will remain awake for days. When the high begins to wear off, the user enters a stage called "tweaking". In this state they are prone to violence, delusions and paranoia. Some users try to alleviate the effects of the crash by taking other drugs such as cocaine or heroin. It has been estimated that 2.5% of the United States population had tried methamphetamine (1997). The drug continues to be more common in the Western parts of the United States, but it is a growing problem among all communities.

Technological Fixes for Meth

One of the restrictions to prevent the creation of is when you go to the grocery store or drug store, you can't buy more than a couple of ounces of sudafed and ephedrine products. Your ID is also scanned and you have to sign for it. This makes sure that you do not go across the street to the other drug store and buy even more of the products.

Tip-A-Cop is another way the law is cracking down on the sale of not only meth but other illegal drugs, you call the hotline and get in contact the narcotics police officers.
